Export restrictions on rare earth metals for magnetic materials from China

Last update: 9-4-2025

Since the 4th of April 2025, new export restrictions have been in force in China on materials used worldwide for the production of magnets. Every export shipment is now subject to a mandatory approval procedure via Chinese customs, with a maximum processing time of 45 working days. This is the current situation at the time of writing based on available information, exact guidelines may change and are subject to change.

What does this mean for you as a customer?

Although our regular suppliers have the required export licences, each export shipment is now subject to a mandatory approval procedure through Chinese customs. This procedure can take up to 45 working days. In addition, we are seeing an increasing backlog of shipments in China, which is putting additional pressure on container capacity and international freight transport.

As a result, we expect delays in the delivery of magnetic materials and products in the coming period.

In addition, it is expected that this situation will inevitably lead to price increases. Think of higher costs for raw materials, transport and availability. Unfortunately, this forces us to pass on some or all of the price increases.
We understand that this is an undesirable situation, especially when your production depends on timely and affordable delivery. You are not alone in this: we are facing the same challenges and are doing our utmost to achieve the best workable solutions together with you.

Specifically, this means:

  • Delays in delivery time for pending orders. We will contact you about this.
  • Longer delivery times for new orders of products that depend on magnetic materials from China.
  • Price increases for products affected by this situation.

We understand that this may affect your planning and projects. We are proactively thinking along with you to respond to this in the right way.
